ICYM Karnataka’s DELTA Program Unites Youth Leaders Across Coastal Dioceses.

Udupi, August 18, 2024 – The Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) Karnataka Region successfully organised the DELTA (Diocesan Executive Leader Training Advancement) programat Anugraha Pastoral Centre. The two-day event, held on August 17 and 18, was hosted by ICYM Udupi Diocese and brought together Diocesan Executive Committee (DEXCO) members from five dioceses: Udupi, Mangalore, Puttur, Belthangady, and Karwar.

The program began with a vibrant inaugural ceremony featuring His Holiness Most Rev. Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi Diocese, alongside Rev. Fr. Lourd Raj, Regional Youth Director (RYD) of ICYM Karnataka Region, and Sister Molly, Regional Youth Lady Animator (RYLA) of ICYM Karnataka Region. Other notable dignitaries included Rev. Fr. Steven Fernandes, Diocesan Youth Director (DYD) of ICYM Udupi Diocese, Mr. Sanjay Dsouza, President of ICYM Karnataka, and Ms. Ashley Dsouza, General Secretary of ICYM Karnataka.

In his address, Bishop Gerald Lobo urged the youth to become more actively involved in politics and entrepreneurship, highlighting the importance of dynamic leadership in these sectors. The inaugural ceremony concluded with the ICYM national anthem, setting a tone of unity and purpose for the event.

Additional dignitaries present included Rev. Fr. Joby Pullattu, DYD of SMYM Belthangady, Mr. Anson Nazareth, President of YCS/YSM India, Mr. Akwil Fernandes, National Executive Committee (NT-EXCO) member of ICYM India, Miss Jessica Santhmayor, Secretary of Karnataka Regional Youth Commission (KRYC), and Miss Jesvita Dsouza, President of YCS/YSM Karnataka.

The first session of the program was conducted by Rev. Fr. Sudeep Paul, Regional Secretary of Social Communication and Director of Sandesha Foundation. His insightful talk on “Role & Impact of Media on Youth” emphasized the significant effects of media on society and encouraged responsible usage by the young leaders.

Participants engaged in a range of group activities designed to develop essential leadership skills, including teamwork, planning, and execution. These activities were complemented by a thought-provoking debate on contemporary issues such as AI vs. NI, the decline in spirituality, and inter-caste marriages. The debates showcased the participants’ thorough preparation and active engagement.

The event was further energized by lively animations conducted by each diocesan team, leading into a Mass and adoration led by Fr. Lourd Raj. The cultural night on the first day featured various talents from the dioceses, culminating in a spirited Baila dance that celebrated youth diversity and unity.

Day two commenced with Sunday Mass and an engaging session on “The Power of Leadership” by V. Rev. Fr. Charles Menezes, former IYCS chaplain and Parish Priest of Udupi Church. His session, filled with humor and interactive elements, left a strong impression on the participants.

A poignant visit to the Ozanam Old Age Home in Santhekatte was a highlight of the day. The youth celebrated Grandparents’ Day with the elderly residents through songs, dance, and meaningful interactions, fostering connections and learning valuable life lessons.

The program concluded with a reflection and feedback session, followed by a valedictory ceremony attended by key dignitaries including Fr. Lourd Raj, Fr. Steven Fernandes, Sr. Molly, Sr. Deepa Thomas, DYLA of SMYM Belthangady, Mr. Akwil Fernandes, Mr. Sanjay Dsouza, Ms. Ashley Dsouza, and Mr. Godwin Mascarenhas, President of ICYM Udupi Diocese.

Fr. Steven and Fr. Lourd Raj expressed their gratitude to the REXCO team and Udupi DEXCO for organizing a successful event, while Mr. Sanjay Dsouza was honored for his exceptional service as ICYM Karnataka’s Regional President. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Ashley Dsouza and the ICYM national anthem, marking the end of a productive and memorable gathering.

The DELTA program not only enhanced the leadership skills of the youth but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and collaboration among the dioceses, paving the way for a promising future in the region.
