Udupi: On Sunday, July 16, 2023, starting at 9:00 am, Vana Mahothsava, also known as the ‘Forest festival‘, was celebrated at the Milagres Cathedral Premises in Kallianpur. This annual week-long tree-planting festival is observed in India during the month of July.
The event was organized by members of various local organizations, including the Catholic Sabha, Milagres Cathedral Unit, ICYM, Kallianpur; Milagres Friends, Environment Commission, Milagres Cathedral, Lions Club and Lions Club Swarna, Kallianpur. The International Lions Organization District 317C, led by Governor Dr. Neri Carnelio and his team, was also present at the event.
Rev. Fr. Valerian Mendonca, the Rector of the Cathedral, graced the occasion and congratulated the members for celebrating this unique event and their commitment to caring for the environment by planting more trees. During the event, Fr. Mendonca and Dr. Carnelio distributed saplings to all the attendees.
The primary objective of Vana Mahothsava is to raise awareness about the importance of trees and encourage individuals to increase their planting efforts. This initiative plays a vital role in environmental preservation, to which we are indebted. The focus of the event is on planting native trees that easily adapt to local conditions, integrate into ecosystems, and have a high survival rate.
