Christmas crib and star was always fascinating to me since the childhood. Hence every Christmas some unique thing was there from country cowshed to mountain caves. Bamboo strips were used for making star. Either full star with red colour glass paper or each section with different colour until my father brought me a foldable light pink colour paper star with many star holes. I loved this star as when a light bulb inserted in it, these holes would shine bright. Later lighting improved by putting a tube light starter in series in the wire made it flicker (Twinkling star)
Then things improved by putting two bulbs in the star and with the help of a small motor, made the bulbs go on and off alternatively. Cribs were almost the same except change in landscape. Christmas trees were rare using real ( natural) trees. Once or twice made them using wind tree (Casuarinaequisetifolia) and simple decorations as Christmas ornaments were not available. But still the spirit was there to decorate with coloured crape paper garlands and some small toys.
And when everything was ready on Christmas Eve electric power would go off putting water on your efforts. There are some instances of using technology also. I was having a view master ( seeing slides in a box) I made it work in reverse by applying torch light and focusing the Christmas related picture on the wall. Later with the help of spool tape recorder, two ends of the Silent Night song magnetic tape joined together so that Silent Night would play endlessly.
I am the first to make moving stars for Christmas. Four stars with light bulbs in them connected to a wooden turn table, arranged the switching one after the other in a way that bulbs would light one after the other making a feeling of moving star. However obstacles were there as chicken made turntable it’s laying egg place and destroying electric contacts.
Now after my retirement and settling down, I changed my Christmas decorations concepts by different theme each year Santa taking nap, Santa sledge ride, Santa ice skiing on roof top, Santa on a motorcycle, Santa on aeroplane, Santa on a boat, Santa on a helicopter, Santa in space, Santa on a train and this year Santa on Rudolf the red nose reindeer. The figures of the crib were made life size drawn on thermocol and new additions and changing figures every time. This year the holy family statues are actually dressed in coloured cloth making it 3D realistic.
Thank you very much and wish you Merry Christmas.
