Udupi: Milagres Cathedral warmly welcomed its new parish priest, rector, and dean of Kallianpur Deanery, Rev. Msgr. Ferdinand Gonsalves, on 13 July 2024.
At 3:30 PM, Rev. Msgr. Ferdinand Gonsalves arrived at the cathedral, accompanied by V. Rev. Fr Charles Menezes, Parish Priest of Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi, and Rev. Fr Vijay D’Souza, Assistant Parish Priest of Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi.
The reception, led by Fr Pradeep Cardoza, Assistant Parish Priest of Milagres Cathedral, greeted the new rector at the portico. V. Rev. Dr. Roshan D’Souza, Chancellor of Udupi Diocese, Mr. Melwyn Sequiera, Vice President of Parish Pastoral Council, Mrs. Eugene Rebello, Secretary of Parish Pastoral Council, and Mrs. Prema Lewis, Coordinator of the Parish Pastoral Commission, presented bouquets to the new parish priest and rector.
Among those extending their greetings were Rev. Fr Steevan Fernandes, Director of the Youth Commission, Fr Ronson D’Souza, Director of Holy Cross Home, Katpady, Rev. Dr. Roque D’Souza, Parish Priest of Mount Rosary Church, Fr Oliver Nazareth, Assistant Parish Priest of Mount Rosary Church, Rev. Fr Alphonsus D’Lima of Milagres Home, V. Rev. Fr Vincent Crasta of CESU and Br Shawn Andrade. A large number of parishioners were also present to witness the ceremony.
Following the warm reception, a procession led the new rector into the cathedral. V. Rev. Dr. Roshan D’Souza, delegate of the Bishop of Udupi, handed over the charge and responsibilities to Rev. Msgr. Ferdinand Gonsalves. The profession of faith was conducted in the presence of V. Rev. Dr. Roshan D’Souza. Rev. Msgr. Ferdinand Gonsalves then took an oath of unwavering service to the parish.
V. Rev. Dr. Roshan D’Souza handed over the parish files to the new parish priest. Mr. Melwin Sequeira presented a list of parish families and account books to the new rector. This was followed by the parish pastoral council members pledging their support by lighting candles from the new parish priest and assistant parish priest.
A brief introductory program followed, where Mrs. Eugene Rebello gave a history of Milagres Cathedral. V. Rev. Dr.Roshan D’Souza explained the roles and pastoral duties of the rector and parish priest under Canon Law and highlighted the significance of the diocesan cathedral. He noted that Rev. Msgr. Ferdinand Gonsalves also serves as the Vicar General of the Diocese, Spiritual Director of the Laity Commission, Director of SCC, Dean of Kallianpur Deanery, and Correspondent of Milagres Educational Institutions, and other responsibilities. He emphasized the need for parishioners’ support for Rev. Msgr. Gonsalves, given the extensive responsibilities he shoulders.
The new appointment comes after the sudden demise of former rector, V. Rev. Fr Valerian Mendonca, leaving a significant void that Rev. Msgr. Gonsalves has now filled.
In the end, Mrs. Prema Lewis delivered a vote of thanks. Fr Pradeep Cardoza compered the felicitation programme. The ceremony was attended by many priests, nuns, and parishioners, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Milagres Cathedral.
