On Tuesday, October 17th, as I was returning home from college, a 10-15 minute walk from the Santhekatte bus stand to my home. As I walked, I noticed a massive explosion of smoke in the air. Fearing for my family’s safety, I quickened my pace, worried that my mom might have left the stove on while she went to talk to the lady next door.
However, it turned out that a fire had accidentally erupted at a storage yard in Pakkibettu Kallianpur, near Baba Soda, Udupi. The yard, situated on privately leased land, served as a storage facility for equipment used by the Varahi water pipeline project execution company.
Nobody knows how the fire started, but it spread rapidly, the entire yard. The labourers who lived on-site, using the yard as their shelter, lost all their belongings, including money, gold jewellery, food, and other valuable items. They lost everything in a matter of minutes, leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
As I watched what was happening, I imagined how devastating it must be for them. There were many people, from small children to elderly individuals, all gathered together, trying to make sense of the chaos.It’s hard to imagine how painful it must be to lose everything in an instant.
I thought about how much time and effort they must have invested in collecting those belongings. The money they saved, the food they craved, the clothes they cherished – all gone. Even losing one of my favorite belongings hurts me deeply; imagining their situation was almost unbearable.
This incident taught me a valuable lesson: to appreciate and cherish what I have today, rather than constantly dreaming of more for tomorrow. What if I lost everything I have today while striving for something more? Nobody knows what the future holds for us; everything is uncertain.
So, let’s rejoice, celebrate, and be content with what we have today. Let’s not be greedy, but instead, appreciate the beauty of the present moment. Let’s learn to be grateful for what we have, and not take anything for granted.
