Maundy Thursday Celebration in Milagres Cathedral- Kallianpur.

Udupi : On April 6th, 2023, Milagres Cathedral,  Kallianpur  observed Maundy Thursday with great devotion and joy. The Holy Thursday, also known as Covenant Thursday.  The main celebrant was Most Rev Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi Diocese along with  Very Rev Fr. Valerian Mendonca, Rector of the Cathedral, Rev Fr. Joy Andrade, Asst. parish priest, Very Rev Fr. Denzil Martin,  Superior of Pilar Fathers and Rev Fr. Nithesh D’Souza Vocational Promoter of Pilar Fathers as  co-celebrants.

The evening liturgy, which began at 6:30 pm, marked the start of the three-day Easter celebration, known as Triduum, where Christians all over the world  remember the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

During his homily, Rev Fr. Nithesh D’Souza emphasized the significance of Maundy Thursday, where Jesus Christ constituted the Sacrament of Priesthood of His Apostles and gave an example of service by washing their feet giving them  a new commandment to serve and to love one another. He emphasized that Jesus is present in the Eucharist and through it, God completely loves us. The priest acts as a mediator between God and man and  is the gift of God to us.

Bishop Gerald then carried out the ritual of  washing the feet of twelve parishioners, commemorating  washing the feet of his disciples by Jesus during the Last Supper.

After the mass, the Holy Eucharist was placed on the altar of repose, decorated with beautiful flowers and candle lights, and adoration prayers were led by Rev Fr. Joy Andrade. It was explained to the faithful that this is an invitation to silent and prolonged adoration of the sacrament instituted by Jesus on this day.

The liturgy of Good Friday was announced, and the Way of the Cross was scheduled to be held at the Cathedral at 9 am on Good Friday.

Ms. Lerissa D’Souza compered the liturgy of Holy Thursday devotionally.
