A day long Seminar on ‘Church and Media’ organized at Anugraha Pastoral Center, Santhekatte.

Udupi : On Sunday, 28th May, 2023 from 10 am to 4.45 p.m. a day-long seminar on ‘Church and Media’ was jointly organized by Deepa Trust, Uzwaad Fortnightly, Commission for Social Communications, and SIGNIS INDIA at the Diocesan Pastoral Centre ‘Anugraha’ Kukkunje, Santhekatte. The seminar aimed to explore the role of media in the church and its importance for evangelization.

Fr. Denis D’Sa, PRO –  Udupi Diocese, highlighted the church’s recognition of the significance of media during the Second Vatican council. He emphasized the need to utilize media for evangelization and promote truth, trust, and tolerance.

The seminar was inaugurated by Msgr. Ferdinand Gonslaves, Chairman of Deepa Trust, along with Fr. Roshan D’Souza, Fr. Denis D’Sa, Fr. Royson Fernandes, and other dignitaries. Fr. Roshan emphasized the indispensability of media in the current age and expressed support for the seminar.

Msgr. Ferdinand Gonsalves acknowledged the growing importance of media for the church and its role in communicating its service to society. Fr. Royson Fernandes proposed a vote of thanks, and Fr. Alwyn Sequeira – Uzwaad Editor compered the  program.

The seminar featured four resource persons who discussed various aspects of the relationship between the church and media. Fr. Sudeep Paul – Director – Sandesha spoke on the present scenario of “Church and Media,” Dr. Ronald Anil Fernandes – KPSC Member addressed the topic “Church and Print Media,” Mr. Walter Nandalike – Director – Daijiworld  focused on “Church and Web/Social Media,” and Mr. Clifford Pereira – Director – TV9 –  discussed “Church and Visual/Digital Media.”

The valedictory program, presided over by Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo, included Rev. Fr. Valerian Mendonca, Fr. Victor Vijay Lobo, and the three resource persons. Feedback on the seminar was given by two participants, Michael D’Souza and Mrs. Cifha Saldanha.

Rev. Fr. Valerian Mendonca stressed the media’s responsibility in upholding truth and making it accessible to people. Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo felicitated Fr. Alwyn Sequeira – Editor designate of Uzwaad  and wished Fr. Royson Fernandes success in his upcoming studies in media at Rome. Fr. Victor Vijay Lobo distributedparticipation certificates, and he also provided an overview of SIGNIS INDIA and its role in promoting the church’s interests in media.

The report concluded with the release of the book “Poilee Bhet” (First Meeting), a collection of 16 stories written by Fr. Royson Fernandes and published by “Uzwaad Prakashan,” by Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo. Bishop Lobo acknowledged the media’s support in promoting the diocese’s interests and expressed gratitude towards Dr. Ronald Anil Fernandes, Walter Nandalike, and Clifford Pereira.

Fr. Royson Fernades delivered the vote of thanks, and the program was hosted by Ms. Joshita Menezes.
